Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz - Day 1 on CA 1

Highway 1 is the quintessential California road trip. It winds its way through small coastal towns, farms, breathtaking scenery, and a few hairy turns. Having lived in California my whole life I still had yet to do this drive and decided it was about time! Naturally I took to Google and went crazy looking for the best California 1 itineraries but found so many of them to be so inclusive that they would take a week to complete, and I didn't have that kind of time. SO, i decided to wing it. I had 2 days to get myself from San Diego to SanFrancisco and wanted to see the best of highway 1 in 2 days.

After driving through L.A. and making it through the valley you finally get into Santa Barbara which is a slice of heaven after sitting in the car dealing with LA traffic. I suggest stopping in downtown Santa Barbara at South Coast Deli, which has the best turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich. Plus they give you a dum-dum lollipop with your sandwich which brings me back to being a kid!
A short walk from lunch is State Street, kind of like the main street in downtown SB. There are lots of little shops and restaurants and a Ben and Jerry's for a little sweetness after lunch ;) It is my favorite!

After driving a bit longer you finally reach the split for the 1 and you drive for quite a while through farmland. From cows, horses and goats to vineyards , i was fully convinced that they had it awesome because they were so close to the coast and had miles of land to be on. Ooh, we also saw white a few llamas or alpacas? I'm not sure which they were haha

Eventually we made our way into San Luis Obispo, but were sure to make a stop at the Madonna Inn. It's this motel that is so elaborately decorated you feel like you are in some weird cross between disneyland, a candy shop, and a valentines day restaurant, but trust me as crazy as it sounds it is such a fun place to stop buy some chocolates and explore.

Next Stop was Morro Bay. Nathan and I accidentally missed our turn and ended up getting into town through the state park which was such a great detour. Eventually we went out to the rock which is nothing like what I thought it would be. IT's HUGE!! I always envisioned a small rock kind of like a statue but I was totally wrong.

Driving further north we stopped in Cayucos long enough to get lost and then finally made our way into Cambria, the destination for the day.
