Let's Talk: Self Love

Self Love Quote - www.greysuede.com

Today I wanted to talk about something that I think is beyond important and so critical for us young women especially in the world we live in that is blasting so many things at us on social media, tv, magazines, and the internet in general... and that is Self Love. You have probably been told that you have to love yourself first or similar statements growing up and I don't discount them, but loving yourself takes a lot more effort than that advice seems to convey. It's not something that can happen overnight and it takes work every single day, but in a world where we are constantly comparing ourselves to others, practicing self love is essential.

In the past year I think I have struggled with this more than I would like to admit, but a few months ago I decided to make a promise to myself to start loving who I am today, not the person I want to be or wish I could be. I made a promise to start small because for me, baby steps are critical and most importantly to adopt a mantra: "my own well being is sacred"

Self love is the foundation on which we hold ourselves each day, it is the culmination of what we think, what we do, and what we say. We must be proud of who we are for the way that we treat ourselves. It's time to stop comparing ourselves to the women we see on screens and to start treating our own bodies with love from the inside out. Self love is a million things and can be practiced in so many ways but here are my five favorite ways to start loving yourself today.

1. Start each day's to do list with "ME" - it's a reminder throughout the day that you are important and that you should take the time to do something nice for yourself whether its a bubble bath or yoga class, do something for you each day.

2. Drink more water - I know this one seems silly but when we are busy with school or work or our families we don't always drink enough water and that is in turn reflected in our energy levels and our skin.

3. Unplug - dedicate a few hours, and evening, or even a whole day to removing yourself and unplugging from technology entirely. That means logging out of all social media accounts, turning off the computer or tv or tablet, and putting your phone on silent and out of sight. Connect with yourself and the people that are physically with you rather than the ones on the other side of a screen.

4. Start a journal or a list of your successes - big or small it doesn't matter. write down your successes and read them when you're having a rough day.

5. Tidy up your living space - declutter and clean the space you live in and you will find your mind feels a little bit clearer too. Take this opportunity to think about what you want your space to feel/look like and map out how you can work on achieving it.
