Trinidad, CA

The moment I saw the coastline in Trinidad, California, I shouted "This is what I have been looking for! It's a Northern California rocky coast!" It's what I had expected near Big Sur when I drove the Central California coast from San Diego to San Francisco and didn't really find. Trinidad is way up North, north of Eureka on the 101 towards Oregon. It's a tiny town that sadly you could easily drive right by without even realizing what you're missing.

Over the weekend Nathan and I went camping at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and drove into Trinidad to get some ice, gas, and a hot coffee/tea since we didn't bring a camp stove and were eating only cold food in the cold weather. In hindsight terrible idea but part of the fun in camping is being less than ideally comfortable right? We thought the town was super cute and continued to drive through it when we discovered this little cove.

At the top of the cliffs was this historic lighthouse that is a replicate of the one in working order on the far end of the cove which led to a steep staircase that brought you down to the beach. I practically ran down the stairs and onto the dark sandy beach to take in the rocks and the sun that was getting ready to set on the horizon. My iPhone photos don't do it justice but seriously it is so pretty and the only thing missing was a pirate ship right out of The Goonies!

Besides for this gorgeous cove which has charming bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals dotting the street above, Trinidad also had some cute little shops and coffee places. If you're planning a trip up the 101 North, I definitely suggest you make a quick stop in Trinidad, I know I want to go back in the summer now to see it when I might actually dip my tow in the ocean water haha!
