GS Reads: Fates and Furies Final Discussion

Congratulations - we finished our first GS Reads book! Yay!!! You should have finished Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff and hopefully you checked out our first discussion for part 1 here
So... Mathilde. Part two was her story and boy was it different than Lotto's. I found myself reading her story quicker and felt that there was so much there that she hid from Lotto, it was crazy!

Below you will see a few questions about what we've read so far. Read through them and share your answers in the comments below. I would love for this to be a discussion so please respond to each others answers and questions!

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

  1. What did you think of the book? Did you like it/ hate it?
  2. Mathilde kept her past a secret during her entire marriage. Do you think she should have told Lotto about her past and her family? If she had, do you think it would have changed their relationship, for better or worse?
  3. Mathilde is very angry and seeks revenge. Do you think her decisions to keep her life so compacted contribute to her building anger? How do the men in her life affect her anger?
  4. Do you think Mathilde was happy in her marriage?

My Answers:

  1. I liked it, but I can only say that because the second half was more enjoyable to me. I thought the first part was really slow. I think it's interesting to see a story from two sides, a marriage from both parties, the stories that are shared and the ones that aren't.
  2. Mathilde kept everything about her past from Lottobit seems. I find it a little hard to believe that he never thought it was weird or that he didn't keep pressing for information. I think most people are curious about their partners life. I could understand why she would keep Ariel from Lotto but her childhood and uncle was hard to believe. Also she never told him why they could never have children even though he clearly wanted them. I think that would have been a difficult conversation but would only be fair to Lotto.
  3. I completely believe that Mathilde bottled her anger up and this contributed to her anger. I was shocked at her rage against her parents, I can see the immense anger but her actions were vindictive and permanent.
  4. There were clearly natural ups and downs in their marriage but I think Mathilde was happy. I think her marriage was a form of her revenge, she controlled so much of Lottos life from his mother to his career and even his ability to have children with her.
