Fall in Shenandoah

What to Wear on a Fall Hike

I spent the weekend in Washington D.C. visiting one my friends from college. She's lived there for a couple of years and its always fun to go visit especially since she is by big sister back from sorority days. I've been to DC quite a few times and she lives there so seeing the sights and all the monuments was not on the priority list for this trip.

Neither of us had ever been to Shenandoah National Park before and it's only about a two hour drive from D.C. into Virginia so we decided to spend Saturday out amongst the rocks and trees and mountains. We used Getaround since having a car in the district can be more trouble than its worth and it was super easy to walk a few blocks and pick up a car for the day. It was also way easier than renting a car through a car rental company.

After a few wrong turns we finally made it into the park and made our way to the Stony Man trailhead. Stephen was the park ranger at the entrance and he was amazing- he gave us great directions on getting to the trailhead and tips for making the hike great.

If you have been to Shenandoah you can understand when I say that choosing which hike to do is incredibly difficult. There are so many to choose from and they all look and sound like the perfect hike. I was still a little jet lagged so we went for a shorter hike with spectacular views. Stony Man is about 3 miles and you have the option to extend it or make it shorter depending on how you are feeling.

I wish San Diego experienced fall even remotely like this. There is something almost magical about the warm sun and crisp air as you are surrounded by fallen leaves and trees saying goodbye to summer with a show of yellow, orange, and red. We were here a little early so the color wasn't at it's prime but in a few weeks (mid to late October) it should be absolutely stunning.

I came back and instantly told Nathan we are planning a New England trip next Fall. So if you have done one or live there please let me know your suggestions! I feel like I want to start planning right away haha. Fall fever is hitting me hard.

I'm excited though since I will be in Canada this weekend so hopefully even more gorgeous Autumn hues will be found. Until then, I am nursing a cold and hoping my sinus pressure goes away before flying again. I hope you are having a great week so far!
