Takenaka Inari Shrine in Kyoto is a lesser known local shrine that sits atop a hill in a sleepy neighborhood of homes. When I asked my hotel about the shrine they had to look it up and then described it as local, not a tourist place. This sounded perfect to me! We rented a couple of bikes and were on our way trying to weave through both people and cars.

We completely underestimated how long it would take us and how many hills we would have to go up and the sun was starting to set. Also, biking in a silk dress when it's breezy isn't the greatest idea. I had some near Marilyn Monroe moments. But it was beyond worth it once we got there. There was one other couple there and that was it. Lining the path of tori gates were trees completely covered in blooms.

Both Nathan and I were so happy we decided to bike all the way over to this little shrine on our first afternoon in Kyoto after traveling on the train all day. Off the beaten path gems like this are one of my favorite things to discover while traveling. Major sights are still great but I like finding those quiet places where locals go and crowds are impossible to find. It's like a breath of fresh air.
