Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine in Tokyo is a piece of magic nestled in this massive urban forest. After walking just a few feet in you are transplanted into a wooded park setting with sounds of birds chirping and leaves blowing in the wind. It's a bit of a walk depending on where you enter from to the shrine itself but well worth it. It is customary and respectful to cleanse your hands and wash before entering.

You rinse your left hand and then your right. You then pour water into your left hand and rinse your mouth with this water. Then rinse your left hand again and let the water run down the handle of the dipper.

Once inside the shrine it is gorgeous and if you are lucky you will see a traditional Japanese wedding. We saw guests arriving for one but no bride or ceremony. We came late afternoon as the sun was setting and the golden light cast on the buildings made it feel even extra magical.
